much. we're following breaking news concerning two police involved shootings. the most recent happened on 17th street northeast. we have live pictures from that scene to show you. this occurred shortly before 7:00 this morning when officers were called to a home for reports of a domestic assault. the police chief just told reporters that as the officers approached the home, the suspect came up from behind and attacked them. an officer was stabbed by the suspect who he then shot. that suspect did die. the officer suffered several wounds, but they are not life- threatening. the other police involved shooting we're following happened in northern virginia on the fauquier stafford county line. deputies were called out to investigate a possible dui and became involved in an altercation with the suspect. they say he had a knife and tried to attack a deputy. that deputy then shot the suspect who died at the scene.

the latest following superstorm sandy it's blamed for at least 94 deaths in the u.s. two victims, a 4-year-old and his 2-year-old brother, who were swept away from their mother's arms as she tried to escape the waters on staten island. it could be 10 days before power is restored to everyone. gas shortages continue to cause problems. many stations simply don't have power and fuel trucks are having trouble making deliveries because of the damage. the "new york times" reports some emergency services were slowed down yesterday. officials have reached an agreement with a fuel supplier to ensure operations can continue. these pictures show team members rescuing people from flood waters tuesday night. the federal emergency management agency activated the team sunday. it's unclear how long the team

will stay in new jersey. this morning, dominion virginia power has mobilized their crews to the northeast. >> sherri ly is live at the staging area at national harbor with more details now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning allison and tony. the crews began leaving here at national harbor in last hour in waves. they are all gone now, on the road headed to new jersey, where they will help restore power to those hardest hit by superstorm sandy. they're sending 1500 workers, between 200 and 250 bucket trucks to help with the efforts. the crews have been working 12 hour shifts since sunday. and they could be deployed for as long as two weeks to new jersey. sandy made landfall on the jersey shore four days ago. dominion crews are assisting first energy and will head to an area in lakewood first

before getting to work. given the devastation, the crews are bringing all they need, including trailers to sleep. crews know the conditions are difficult, but they also know people are counting on them. >> got to think about the people you're going to help. they don't have no power. they're in bad shape, stuff like that. conditions are terrible. they don't have no heat. we've been through that too, at our house, where we're from. and you got to think about what you're doing, what you're there for, to help the people. >> reporter: they were able to restore power to the more than 200,000 customers it had that were hit by sandy. that gave them the ability to free up their crews to head to the northeast to help restore power there. they already have crews in manhattan, helping to restore power there. they have underground line crews working with officials in new york city.

campus of penn state university, he thanked new jersey governor chris christie for doing a fine job. springsteen along with bon jovi and billy joel will headline a concert tonight. proceeds donated to the red cross. bruce is keeping busy, after the concert, he's setting his eyes on the campaign trail with barack obama. he'll join the president in madison, wisconsin monday, where he'll perform. then, the pair will travel to columbus, ohio, where they'll meet up with jz for an event. employers added 171,000 jobs last month. however, that's not enough to keep pace with the growing economy and the unemployment rate actually went up to 7.9%. >> the unemployment report comes as the presidential candidates are in their final push before election day.

wisdom martin is back in studio with more on today's events. >> always a lot of things going on as we get down to the last couple days before we decide who will be president of the united states. allison and tony, first, the president is coming to our area and will be appearing in manassas. dave matthews, the singer, will be there. today, mitt romney starts in wisconsin and both the president and romney both make appearances in the state of ohio. romney has two stops and the president has three. now, he's trying to make up for the lull in campaigning because of the super storm. the president was back on the campaign trail yesterday making appearances in wisconsin, nevada and boulder, colorado. he also got endorsements from the mayor of new york city, who says he's doing it because the president, president obama, has done a lot on global warming. the president is slamming mitt romney, charging he would be a

rubber stamp for the right wing. romney is ridiculing the president for wanting to create a new cabinet position, a secretary of business. >> i don't think what we need is another government bureau accurate that supposedly knows something about job creation. i think it would be a president who actually understands job creation. >> he's saying he's the candidate of change. let me tell you, wisconsin, we know what change looks like. and what the governor is offering sure ain't change. giving more power back to the biggest banks isn't change. leaving millions without health insurance isn't change. another $5 trillion tax cut that favors the wealthy isn't change. >> this week the president's campaign has also started pouring money into democratic leaning states like michigan, minnesota, and pennsylvania. and don't forget about early voting. early voting resumed after being shut down for two days,

and hours were extended. voters in d.c. only waited about 10 minutes yesterday to cast their ballots. tony and allison, back to you. >> final countdown. thank you, sir. new this morning, in the district d.c. mayor gray announcing changes to fines on speed cameras. there's been concern about the fairness of the fines, while making sure the public is safe. the mayor will be joined by the police chief and other transportation officials at the wilson building at 10:30 this morning. prosecutors are recommending a six-day jail sentence for kwame brown. he pleaded guilty to federal bank fraud and a campaign finance violation in june. the agreement called for a sentence of up to six months. but prosecutors say though his crime was serious, he deserves credit for accepting responsibility and for cooperating with law enforcement. coming up, targeting generation y. people under 30 make up a little less than half the population. so what should candidates be

a 99-year-old woman in florida who has lived through two dozen presidential elections is voting for the first time in her life. rosie lewis was inspired to vote after president obama won four years ago and says she promised herself if she lived to see another election, she would vote. she requested a ballot by mail yesterday. a family friend helped her fill it out and turn it in. thank you very much. in 2008, young voters were a

driving force in barack obama's victory. today, 40% of the u.s. population is now 30 years old and under. for each presidential candidate, it's the largest demographic up for grabs. the bigger question, will these voters show up at the polls next tuesday? joining us this morning, vice president of young democrats of america, and chairman of d.c. young republicans. thank you boeing for coming in. appreciate it. >> thanks for having us. >> that last thing i mentioned, let me start with that. kate, i'll start with you, do you think that the young vote is going to turn out in force this year? they did four years ago. >> i think there's no question that four years ago the youth vote turned out in droves. a lot of that was because we had a dynamic candidate obama making promises that really resonated with the youth vote. unfortunately, as president obama really hasn't lived up to those promises. i think a lot of youth are

disappointed to say the least in president obama. i don't think we'll see youth vote turn out as strongly as we did in 2008, but i do think there are a lot of people who are fired up, who recognize we deserve better than what we've seen the past four years, who are going to get out there and vote on tuesday. >> obviously you feel they will vote for mitt romney? >> yes, i do. i think a lot of young people are looking for solutions when we've seen the unemployment, i mean, young people under age 30 represent 40% of the unemployed population. we're frustrated. we're looking for more job opportunities and we see that in the romney/ryan ticket. >> do you think the youth vote will turn out in force this year, and if so, why do you think they will still be in support of barack obama? >> well, i definitely think 2008 was a watershed year once in a moment for our generation when it came to voting for obama. i think they'll turn out again

because we have concerns about this country. we are optimistic about the direction, in the sense we know it has to get better from here. i think they'll turn out for obama. when he came into office, employment was at 10:00, now at 7.8%. young people are interested in issues concerning people of color, lgbt community, health care. young people now can stay on their parents plans till 26, he's stood up for -- >> what about what katie mentioned, what we hear is young people are getting out of college in many cases and can't find a job. do you think that, or don't you think the economic issue will override the other concerns or do you think it won't? >> it's not certainly like pres pass job bills in congress.

certainly it's been very hard when you have a congress predominantly republican that has been pushing back on the jobs bills he's tried to pass. only so much he can do in that regard. but he has done quite a bit to forward the economy regarding the stimulus and making sure that students have lower financial aid on doubling pell grants, et cetera. he's done what he can do within the power of his office. >> kate, a lot of the issues she mentioned are issues we frequently think young people feel to be very important, but do you think it's going to be mainly about the economy now? >> i think it's definitely mainly about the economy. it's about jobs. young people are graduating after investing so much in our education. young people are graduating and there are very few job opportunities for them. young people are ready to, we

want to stand on our own 2 feet. we want to support ourselves. we want to be empowered. the way to do that is creating job opportunities and by getting young people jobs. >> what has mitt romney done to reach out to young voters? >> i think -- >> and has he been effective? >> yeah. mitt romney's message, along with paul ryan, who we have to remember is the first -- the first candidate on a presidential ticket born in the 1970s. he's pretty close to our age when you think about it. i think that's helpful. but i also think it's just message of being willing to make the tough choices necessary to get our country back on track. that's what young people want to see. we've heard enough empty promises from the obama ticket. we heard enough four years that haven't come to fruition. and that's why young people are looking at the republican ticket now. >> the last four years have

been difficult for everybody. can young people be as enthusiastic about this president as they were four years ago? >> i mean, yes. he's not come in and he's not been about empty promises. he said health care would be something young people would have access to, that would be affordable and he's made that happen. he came in, he said that unemployment is at 10% when he was in the rose garden, gave that speech. now it's 7.8%. rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is rebuilding an economy. he's made the inroads of making sure that happens. >> we thank you both for coming in to give us perspective. you know, i think more and more people will be paying attention to this year and in the coming years as well. thank you both. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> allison, back to you. thanks. how soon is too soon for christmas music? plus, imagine driving around with a $23 million winning lottery ticket. it happened to one woman.

a fun day, but really? can't they steal their kids' candy like everyone else? would i have been wrong to embarrass them in front of their kids? this question had us all laughing yesterday. it is a crazy one. but viewer, i do thank you so much for sending this question in. i thought it must be an isolated series of events that took place, like the twilight zone at your house, until i shared this with my coworkers. others experienced the same thing. we're talking about adults, grownups, parents sticking their loot bags out hoping for candy on halloween night. i went online to see if something changed from when i was a kid. what i found there were some that say, why not? we're the ones as adults who make the decision not to go out trick or treating, right? popular wisdom online says there reason any rules that

grownups can't get in on the sugary action. here's what i think, because you asked me, viewer. in no way do i condone grownups expecting to get candy for themselves. i'm talking about trick or treat, and getting candy for themselves. it is for the kids. just like we raised our eyebrows, remember at actor kelsey grammer taking his 3- month-old baby to a halloween party at the playboy mansion. i give this look for adults trying to grab the fun sized butterfingers on halloween night. come on, parents. this is for the little ones. as a matter of fact, i thought it was proper etiquette for parents to let the little ones run up and get the loot on their own. kind of a grownup thing to do. that's what i thought happens. simply, let me say, again, the candy is for the kids. but viewer, you asked should i have embarrassed the parents? i say there's no need to

embarrass the adults. you give the candy, they'll continue to do it. so maybe the same parents who came this year, this is what i'm supposed to do, because this guy gave me candy. so you have to put to it. maybe do like a neighbor of mine does, have mini bottled water for the parents or similar to that. give the treats kids always say, i don't want that, it's what they say, the fruit and stuff, stuff that you maybe should give out. bottom line, trick or treating is for the kids. if you want candy, moms and dads, buy some candy, or do like the viewer said, which is what we all do, take the candy from your kids later. >> really, isn't that the best thing to do? you don't want them to have all that candy. >> don't want them to have it. i split it. we'll put this in a jar. whatever. my thing is, also, no, no need to embarrass. you could say, hey, i would do it like this, hey, isn't trick for treating for the kids?
